Money-saving Tips: Energy-efficient Shower Heads

< Blog list

If you like to save money, this article is for you. Shower heads may not be the most exciting of subjects but an energy-saving shower head will save you money and help the environment! It’s good to be green, after all.

Why energy-efficient shower heads?

In the UK, the average shower takes around eight minutes and uses an estimated 60 litres of water. Whilst this is still significantly less than a bath, a simple change to your shower head could save you money not only on your water bill but also on your energy bill. This is because 70% of the water used in showers is hot, so reducing the amount of water used means you are also reducing the amount of water to that needs to be heated and therefore saving on energy.

With the rising cost of energy, it is more important than ever to make sure you are taking care of your home and reducing your utility bills. If you have a shower that's fed directly from your boiler or hot water tank, fitting an energy-efficient shower head could seriously reduce the amount of hot water you use.

Which shower head is best for me?

The good news is that you don’t have to sacrifice your quality of shower to enjoy the benefits of saving money and being green. Today’s energy-saving shower heads are engineered to provide an enjoyable shower experience. There are two types of energy-saving shower heads, which are:

• Non-aerating shower heads
• Aerating shower heads

What are the pros and cons of each shower head?

Non-aerating shower heads work by forcing the water through smaller holes to produce a high-pressure flow. This option is for you if you prefer a strong shower.

Aerating shower heads work by restricting the flow of water and mixing it with air. This makes the water appear to flow at the same volume as a regular shower head. The result is a lower pressure and more gentle showering experience. The disadvantage of this is that because the water is mixed with air, you might find yourself turning the heat up to compensate. This can limit the savings you make. In this case, it would be advisable to take shorter showers.

Whichever shower head suits your preference, they are relatively inexpensive to purchase and install, meaning the cost will not outweigh the savings for long.
