How to Choose the Most Energy Efficient Appliances

< Blog list

Welcome back to our blog, this week we will be discussing how to choose the most energy efficient applicances for your home. We all know we should strive to be more energy efficient, but how do we know the best items to purchase to help us on our mission? Let’s find out.

How is Energy Efficiency Rated?
Every reputable product or appliance in the EU should legally be tested on how much energy they consume with fair use. The latest energy rating scale typically ranges from A to G with A being rated at the top of the scale for energy efficiency and G being the lowest rated on the scale.

So, how to choose the best appliances? Here are some of our top tips…

Check the Label
Check the labels on anything you are considering buying for your home as by law, these labels are required to tell you exactly what the energy efficiency rating is for each appliance. On the top rated energy efficient appliances, you will also find the ‘Energy Saving Trust Recommended’ logo and the ‘European Ecolabel’ which indicates that the appliance meets strict environmental criteria.

Choose the Appropriate Size for Your Needs
When considering the environment and the impact of appliances, it’s always best to take your own needs into account when trying to be more eco-conscious. Always pick a product or appliance designed with a size that meets your needs. If you are regularly running an appliance such as a washing machine with smaller loads, it will be far less energy efficient in the long run.

Watch Your Usage
When you have purchased an appliance for your home, it’s now up to you to continue to use it in the most energy efficient way. Consider only running washing machines or dishwashers when they are full and on a lower heat setting. Only boil the kettle with the amount of water you need or think about boiling it just once and filling a flask to make your hot drinks throughout the day.

Go Smart
These days, using a smart appliance can significantly reduce your energy usage for maximum efficiency. Smart appliances can be programmed in subtle ways such as constantly adjusting their use to run at off peak hours or when demand for electricity is lower. Smart appliances provide maximised efficiency alongside maximised performance.

Look for Longevity
It can be tempting to opt for a lower energy efficient appliance if it’s going to cost you less initially, but this can end up costing you more over time in energy usage. Consider what you can afford right now and how your new appliance will help you to reduce your energy usage and costs over the years.
