A home maintenance checklist makes everyday care more manageable. Here are useful monthly, seasonal and annual checks, plus the small repairs worth tackling as they arise.

Monthly checks

Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms using the test method and frequency given by the manufacturer. Look for visible leaks under sinks and around appliances, and check accessible plugs, switches and light fittings for scorch marks, damage or unusual heat. Do not remove electrical covers; ask an electrician to investigate faults.

A quick look around the places you rarely notice can be surprisingly useful. If something has changed, make a note rather than assuming it will resolve itself.

Seasonal maintenance

Check windows and doors for draughts, examine the roof visually from ground level and watch gutters and downpipes during heavy rain. Where work at height is needed, use a suitably equipped professional rather than taking unnecessary risks on a ladder.

Arrange servicing for your boiler or heating system in line with the manufacturer’s guidance. A gas boiler must be serviced by an engineer with the appropriate Gas Safe registration. Review insulation, roof condition and recurring signs of damp or wear, and plan repairs where needed.

Loose handles, deteriorating sealant and chipped paintwork are rarely urgent, but they can accumulate. Repairing them in good time helps keep your home pleasant and prevents some small defects from becoming larger ones.
