Tips for Maximising Small Spaces in Your Home

< Blog list

If you live in a small home, you are most likely familiar with the feeling of wanting to open out the space you have. Here are our top tips for maximising small spaces in your home. Let’s take a look.

Use Mirrors
Mirrors are an excellent way to create the illusion of extra space in your home and will help your spaces look more open and less confined. Strategically place your mirrors opposite natural light sources such as windows to magnify the light and create a feeling of openness. You could also create a mirrored feature wall or add one large mirror to a room to create a stylish focal point.

Keep it Light and Airy
Avoid dark, heavy or solid colours on your walls and stick to lighter, more neutral tones to open up your smaller spaces. Another thing to avoid in homes with limited space is heavy drapes, net curtains and window dressings which will all make your home appear smaller and darker. Use lighter flooring and avoid a large collection of decorative pieces on the walls as opting for one or two favourite statement pieces will allow the appearance of more space.

Use Clever Lighting
There are so many lighting choices available compared to years ago and if you are clever about the way you use them, they can really brighten and open up the smaller spaces in your home. Using stylish uplighters in dark corners or hidden light strips to highlight the features in your rooms are excellent choices. Try to use smaller light fittings to avoid overwhelming a small room.

Utilise Storage
If your house is small or contains lots of small spaces, one of the best things you can do is rethink your storage solutions. Any home will look smaller when it is filled to the brim with family and belongings. Consider using dual purpose furniture to turn a sofa into a bed, or functional furniture with built in drawers. Make use of your vertical wall space by using tall bookshelves or high floating shelves. Transform small corners and nooks into storage spaces with built in shelves and install hooks into existing cupboards to make them more practical.

Declutter
Following on from our comments about storage above, it’s just as important not to store clutter you don’t need. If something isn’t functional, needed or loved, it’s time to have a clear out and declutter. This will instantly revitalise your space into a wider open area. If you struggle with decluttering, try using the ‘one in, one out’ rule which means that every time you buy something, something has to go. This will minimise clutter and really make you think about your purchases, saving you money too!
